I couldn't resist. The aluminum exposed under the receiver generally wrings all there is to get from a rifle, and this trusted old servant of mine shoots a consistent minute-of-angle with anything I care to put through it.

These stocks are a bargain for two-hundred bucks, and ideally suited for these featherweight rifles. I'd be carrying this one all over North America and Africa so weight is important, and the aluminum sure wouldn't hurt accuracy none. The truth is I've been meaning to do it since these stocks came out a couple years ago. These come with one piece floorplates and my trusty old rifle has the two-piecer, plus the WSM barrel is a bit thicker that the one on my old Featherweight.

My skinny barrel will not create any exceptional issues sort of an extreme free-float situation other than aesthetics, and I can always bed it if I don't like it.

However the hinged part of the magazine cover assembly is not as thick or as long as the single piece models, so I'd either have to purchase a new one, which we sell here or simply make arrangements to use mine as it is. I chose the latter with the idea that I could always get another one down the road if I found a good deal on it, and nothing would be lost to use mine as it is.

Here's how I did it Hey, if you want perfection spring for the right floorplate from Stocky's and skip this article. I'm only posting it because you asked me too and no one but you can be responsible for the results On some rifles, a couple of washers under the hinge is all it will take to assemble it all, but since this rifle will get hard use I wanted to secure the magazine box more solidly into everything so in lieu of a standard washer I decided to grind a wide "pan washer" available at any hardware store to fit into the recess under the hinge - it would extend just far enough into the mag box to secure it solidly into the stock.

Choosing stainless steel washers would ensure years of trouble-free hunting in the event I got busy and never replaced the floorplate, an extremely likely occurence.Resources Latest reviews Search resources.

This is a sporter rifle that goes hunting on occasion but mostly gets used at the rifle range shooting prone with a sling, seated, and standing.

Should I bed a Bell and Carlson stock? Thread starter Slofr8 Start date Aug 11, Forums Bolt Action Rifles. JavaScript is disabled. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding.

I've managed to get this rifle to shoot quite well by reloading and only resting the stock just ahead of the mag well on the bag.

I'm not hunting or competing with this rifle, just banging steel here behind the house. I shoot out to yds. Realizing the Houge stock is the weak link aside from me I ordered but have not yet received a Bell and Carlson M40 stock.

Doesn't look like a whole lot of work to tighten up the system but is there a possibility that I make it worse. Using a release agent where needed, I was gonna put enough epoxy in there to fill the void ahead of the lug but try not to get any under the action. Good plan or should I leave it alone and shoot it first. Anyone have any experience with this set up? Thanks, Dan. Jan 23, 1, east central indiana. Why would you fill the void ahead of the lug?The quality of Bell and Carlson stocks will make it very difficult to choose any other for your rifle.

That is why we think it is important for you to take a little time to find out more about our product and our company. Moisture, temperature, recoil energy and repeated firings are all big enemies of even the best wood stocks, and killers of accuracy. Bell and Carlson stocks, constructed using hybrid composite materials called Carbelite and proprietary manufacturing techniques called Fusion, can eliminate those problems. These composites, including Aramid fibers, carbon fibers, graphite, epoxy gel coats and laminating resins; and polyurethane reinforcement with milled fiberglass are formed to provide a warm and solid feel rather than the hollow, toy like impression one gets from injection molded stocks often use the terms such as synthetic and sometimes even terms such as Rynite or Cyloloc.

But their process is much different and produces a completely different stock much less expensive to manufacture. These "drop- in" stocks are designed to last a lifetime with no maintenance required. Because of variations in manufacturers' original equipment, it may be necessary to remove minimal amounts of material from the magazine area. Then get a piece of computer paper and cut it just a little wider than the sandpaper.

With the rear action screw installed tight and the front action screw loose, place the sandpaper between the barrel and the barrel channel. Then put the computer paper between the back of the sandpaper and the barrel so the edges of the sandpaper cannot scratch the barrel.

Grasp both ends of the sandpaper with your thumb and fingers so the sandpaper is lightly snug around bottom and sides of the barrel.

Move the sand paper forward and backward along the barrel channel from the recoil lug all the way to the front of the barrel channel. As you are sanding, keep tightening up the front action screw a little at a time making it just tight enough that you can still move the sandpaper back and forth.

When the front action screw is fully tight and the sandpaper is still able to be moved without binding you are done. You will end up with a free floated barrel and a barrel channel that perfectly matches the taper of your barrel because you are using it as a template with the clearance between the barrel channel and the stock approximately 0.
